The Blue Flag is an international award established in 1987 in the European Year for the Environment and awarded annually in 73 countries, initially only in Europe, more recently also outside Europe. Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label for environmental quality certification of seaside resorts. In 2023, the City of Albisola Superiore was awarded the Blue Flag for the 18th consecutive year.
The FEE recognition not only rewards the quality of the sea and beaches, but also the services offered to citizens, tourists and students, and in general, the activity of the municipality in promoting sustainable development. The main objective of the program is to promote sustainable land management in seaside municipalities through a series of indications that put care and concern for the environment on the forefront of policy choices. For evaluation purposes, seawater quality is considered an imperative criterion: only those localities whose waters are found to be excellent are eligible to apply. Other criteria considered include: sewage treatment, waste management, regulation of vehicular traffic, safety and beach services.
